  • Self-Portrait

My country is a place reinforced by stories and lore. The stories are represented physically at Pagodas, Temples, and metaphorically throughout the language as well. That is one of the reasons my artwork has a lot of narrative and a fable framing aspect to it.This motif is an anthropomorphic representation of the Genie (Djinn) from the Islamic tales and folklore I grew up reading and listening to. The basic back story of The Genie and other characters often seen in my paintings is that they were held captive in a bottle for a long time and they are trying to escape the bottle. I use the Genie to represent my position in the world of my artworks.

Write for Right

On February 1st 2021, the military coup in Burma brings to an end a brief period of democratic governance. Since the takeover, the country has seen massive protests and a general strike calling for a return of democracy and the elected government. Only few days after the coup, the artist(Anonymous) founded the WRITE FOR RIGHT movement. On a truck following the demonstrations, the group of young artists created hundreds of posters to voice the anger of the people of Burma against the regime. When not demonstrating, the artists from the group painted dozens of art pieces to fund the civil government in exile. Witnessing daily the desperation of the crowd in the street, the artist decided one day to bring a blank canvas to a protest down her building. Spontaneously, dozens of people from all backgrounds picked pens to write down their anger at the soldiers facing them but also their fears. The result is a priceless testimony of the democratic aspirations of her society.

Speechless

Empty. Numb. Careless. Unfeeling. The lifeless shell of a human you’ve become. This is vacant soul I see. But there is nothing I can do anymore, Except lie here, Pray here, Stay here, Speechless. #KaireeF

Women's ways of thinking and their behaviour become subject to monitoring. This painting has shown that sense of suffocation where Ga-nouq (the flowery, traditional Myanmar patterns) are stretched around the girl, obscuring their identity and containing the memory of being "written over" by traditional expectations of women.

Red Was Brave

A 1960s poem from a famous Burmese poet , Zaw-Gyi is echoing the resistance and resilience with the metaphor of a delicate yet indestructible Hyacinth/ Bay-Dar flower on top of the gold color background. Like the poem, these two girls are suffering repeatedly from the surrounding repressions but at the end still standing tall with empowerment around them, as if to express nonchalant behavior and highlight their unflappable characters with crises that are presented upon them. These sort of characters are comparable to the Poem’s title ‘yae-khae-the-pa’ which roughly translates to ‘red was brave’, which poetically depicts the victory through these past crises with the flowers on their heads, that are worn nonchalantly as if to say they can pass through any catastrophes. This series was created in Kyiv Ukraine with the color inspiration from the Orthodox Churches in the city and religious icons.
