Classrooms in Crisis

In places shaped by conflict and displacement, the future often becomes uncertain — especially for children.

But in Lay Kay Kaw IDP Camp, even amid instability, something quietly powerful continues every day: learning.

Thanks to Better Burma supporters, we were able to provide essential education assistance, helping sustain the camp’s volunteer-led school and ensuring children can continue studying despite the harsh conditions of displacement.

The education system inside Lay Kay Kaw IDP Camp is operating under extreme adversity. Teachers are working without proper classrooms, reliable materials, or stable income, yet they show up anyway, driven by one belief: children deserve a future beyond war.

Currently, 26 volunteer teachers are supporting displaced children, providing structure, learning, and emotional safety through daily schooling.

Better Burma received 30,050.74 THB to support the educational needs of children at Lay Kay Kaw IDP Camp. These funds helped cover teacher honorariums, educational materials, and transportation costs needed to deliver aid.

This kind of support isn’t flashy but it’s life-changing. It keeps teachers teaching. It keeps children learning. And it keeps hope alive in a place where hope is constantly tested.

Where the Donations Went

Here is how the funds were allocated:

  • 26,000 THB — modest honorarium support for 26 volunteer teachers (1,000 THB per teacher)

  • 1,307.48 THB — art supplies for the school

  • 472 THB — clocks and batteries to help classrooms stay structured and organized

  • 1,500 THB — trip transportation costs

  • 800 THB — round-trip boat fees to reach the camp

Delivering aid is not simple. It requires coordination, travel costs, and navigating difficult routes but we ensured the support reached the community transparently and efficiently.

Why “Small” Supplies Matter So Much

Some of these items might sound ordinary: clocks, batteries, art materials.

But in an IDP camp, ordinary things become extraordinary.

The clocks helps restore routine. Routine creates stability. Stability helps children feel safe again.

Art supplies do more than entertain, they give children a way to express fear, grief, and memory when words are too heavy. As the report notes, creative outlets are important for children’s emotional healing.

Voices from the Field

The impact of this support is best described by the teachers and school leaders themselves.

A volunteer teacher shared:

“The 1,000 THB honorarium per teacher is more than just financial aid, it is a reminder that we are not alone in this struggle.”

They also highlighted the deeper value of the supplies:

“Even small things, like the clocks for our classrooms, make a difference by helping us create a sense of routine for these children.”

The school principal echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how meaningful this assistance is in such difficult conditions:

“Your generosity is a message of hope.”
