Cooking Hope: Nourishing Futures at Thoo Mweh Khee

In the Karen region of southeastern Myanmar, near the Thai border, stands Thoo Mweh Khee Student Dormitory, a vital refuge for young learners pursuing their education far from home. Until recently, these students had no dedicated kitchen, meals were cooked over open fires in unsafe conditions, often under the hot sun or during monsoon rains. With the help of our supporters, Better Burma partnered with I Am Knyaw to construct a new kitchen that now provides a clean, safe, and communal cooking space for the students.

Creating a Space for Nourishment and Learning

The kitchen project aimed to improve nutrition, hygiene, and overall well-being for the dormitory’s residents. Many students rely entirely on the dormitory for food and shelter, and without a proper cooking space, meal preparation was both inefficient and unhealthy.

The construction took place over four weeks in February 2025. The team began by procuring local materials—bricks, sand, and cement—then moved on to building walls, roofing with metal sheets, and installing stoves, washing basins, and storage areas. The new structure includes ventilated windows and secure steel fencing, allowing for airflow while maintaining safety.

Transforming Lives Beyond the Kitchen Walls

Before this project, students faced frequent health risks due to open-fire smoke and poor sanitation. Now, they enjoy regular, healthy meals prepared in a clean environment. The new kitchen also reduces environmental harm by eliminating firewood use, aligning with Better Burma’s commitment to sustainable, community-driven projects.

The students themselves helped in the process—mixing concrete, setting walls, and even learning basic maintenance skills along the way . It became not only a construction effort but also a moment of empowerment and learning for the young residents.
