Empowering people to help each other with immediate basic needs regain stability through community philanthropy.

The challenge

Since the coup, protestors, CDMers and even innocent civilians were met with the might of the military. Week after week, the armed forces have escalated their attacks, which leads to a surprising amount of casualties. While the brutal crackdown has been carried out all over the country, Hlaing Tharyar township is the hardest-hit so far. It is reported that care givers are facing shortage of medical supply. At the same time, cash flow shortfall is emerging as a national wide challenge since the majority of the population has been invested in the resistance movement.

Our Response

  • Channeling donation for the communities in dire need

  • Sending memorial donation to the families of the fallen heroes

  • Channeling donation on behalf of the overseas donors to their friends in Myanmar

Memorial FundMyanmar has been gripped by mass protests demanding an end to the military rule, and at least 261 protesters-many of them young activist-have been killed kill today(23, March 2021). Families and friends have endured great losses with the falling of their beloved ones. Better Burma set up a memorial fund to give support to some of these families. Our greatest sympathy is with them. And we will continue to send our support.

Community CareUnder the brutal ruling of the military regime, people in Myanmar need support now more than ever. Not only could the financial aid be very vital for them to get through the crisis, but also the warm interaction could mean a lot to them at the moment. We reach out to the friends in Myanmar. And we encourage others to do the same. In the meanwhile, we try to hear and learn the needs of the communities in need and respond accordingly.

Channelling Emergency FundWhile the ruthless crackdown has been carried out all over the country, some communities were hit harder than others. The residents over there were facing daily attack from the armed forces. Their resources were drying out after weeks’ self defense. Upon sensing the signal for help, international yogis community had gathered a big fund for the ones in dire need. Better Burma is proud to be able to channel the fund in time.

Relief to IDPsAs of end of September 2021, there are approximately 241,000 people displaced within Myanmar due to conflict and unrest since 1 February 2021. IDPs across the country continue to have extremely limited access to basic services, especially healthcare. The displacement has mainly taken place in Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Magway and Sagaing. While most of IDPs have been able to return to their their places of origin once fighting subsides, the continued armed clashes in some conflict zones have lead to countless IDPs camps in the jungle and refugee movement toward the neighboring countries.

Funding Medical SuppliesThe crisis is escalating. Many regions in Myanmar are facing the dilemma of insufficient medical staff and shortage of medical supplies. What makes the situation worse is that Junta prevents medical teams from offering treatment to the injured. Some medical workers who volunteered to treat the injured have been arrested or even killed. Better Burma reaches out to some medical facilities as well as volunteering medical workers to fund their medical supplies. Hope all the injured will be properly cured.

Donation to MonasticsEven before the military coup, monasteries and nunneries were facing severe food shortages due to the coronavirus pandemic, and many monastics did not have sufficient food. Since the military coup, it has become even more challenging to feed this monastic population. We coordinate with local supporters who work with local monasteries and nunneries and are able to purchase food and other supplies through your donation.
