Frequently Asked Questions
-
Better Burma is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting people and communities affected by conflict, displacement, natural disasters, and other humanitarian challenges in Myanmar. We work with a small team on the ground and a lot of trusted local partners and community networks to provide direct assistance and support longer-term recovery.
-
Our humanitarian work includes food and clean water, healthcare and nutrition, shelter and emergency relief, education, protection and psychosocial support, and livelihood and recovery programs. Our response varies according to the needs of the communities we serve.
-
We work through trusted local organizations, community leaders, grassroots responders, and established networks that understand the needs and conditions in their communities. This locally led approach allows support to reach communities that may be difficult to access.
-
Projects are considered based on urgency, demonstrated community need, feasibility, available funding, and our ability to work with trusted people or organizations on the ground. We prioritize approaches that are locally informed and responsive to the circumstances of each community.
-
We maintain communication with our team and local partners and request project documentation, financial records, photographs, beneficiary information, and narrative reporting where appropriate and safe. The level and type of documentation may vary because of security and operational conditions inside Myanmar.
-
Working in and around Myanmar can involve significant security risks. Publicly identifying certain staff members, volunteers, partners, or communities could place them at risk. For this reason, we sometimes withhold names, locations, photographs, or other identifying information while still documenting and reporting on the work being carried out.

While our humanitarian work provides immediate aid and supports longer-term solutions for communities in need, Insight Myanmar helps raise awareness of what is really happening in Myanmar and among Myanmar communities beyond its borders. Through long-form conversations and other media, it shares voices, experiences, and perspectives that deepen understanding of the country’s humanitarian challenges, history, culture, politics, and spiritual traditions.
