Battling the
Three Big Bad Cs

A memoir of love, loss, resilience and turning a deeply personal journey into support for others.

BY EILEEN LUI

After spending a decade in Myanmar, Eileen Lui witnessed a country transformed by the 2021 military coup. She and her late husband, Richard See, had built a life connected to Myanmar through a youth centre and the social enterprise SoyAi. Following Richard's four-year battle with cancer, Eileen wrote Battling the Three Big Bad Cs in his honour.

85 BOOKS FOUND NEW HOMES

Every book sold at the launch became part of something larger. 100% of the sales proceeds were dedicated to supporting Better Burma and Cancer Research Malaysia.

THE BOOK LAUNCH

Stories that turn
into solidarity.

At NIJU Space, readers, advocates, friends and supporters gathered for more than a book launch. The afternoon brought together conversations about Myanmar, forced migration, cancer, caregiving and grief.

We are deeply grateful to Eileen Lui for choosing to use her memoir to support organizations close to her heart, and for including Better Burma in this meaningful initiative.

Our thanks also go to Mahi Ramakrishnan, a forced migration specialist, poet and award-winning filmmaker, who spoke about the continuing consequences of Myanmar's military coup and the realities facing Myanmar refugees.

Ko Sithu Than Hlaing, a Myanmar refugee living in Malaysia, shared his own experience of the coup, displacement and the journey that eventually forced him to flee his country.

MORE THAN A BOOK
“85 books is more than a number. It's 85 people who chose to engage with grief, with Myanmar, with the mess of it all. It's 85 acts of solidarity.”
